Soakaways & gullies

If water's pooling on your driveway, lawn or patio after rain, the soakaway or gully is usually the culprit — and usually fixable without major works.

Gully clearance

The gully is the small grated drain that catches surface water from your roof or driveway. Leaves, silt and moss build up over time. We vacuum, jet, and check the connecting run.

Soakaway diagnosis

When a soakaway fails it's usually one of three things:

  • Silted up — gravel pit clogged with fines. Often jet-flushable.
  • Crushed crate system — modern plastic crates can collapse under driveways. Needs excavation and replacement.
  • Wrong location — too close to the house, on heavy clay, or below the water table. Needs relocating.

What we do

  • CCTV the surface-water run to confirm the failure point
  • Jet and vacuum if recoverable
  • Excavate, replace crates, re-wrap with geotextile and gravel if not
  • Issue a written drainage compliance note (Part H) where required

Frequently asked questions

How long does a new soakaway take?+

A typical domestic crate soakaway replacement is 1–2 days including reinstatement.

Do I need planning permission?+

Not for like-for-like replacement on a single dwelling. New builds and extensions need Part H sign-off, which we can document.
